School Safety Certification Course

ALL accredited Texas schools are legally required to have an armed presence on campus commensurate with the size of the campus. Frankly, having an ISD-exclusive police force is the best option, but most school systems outside of major cities can’t afford that expense.

The law allows for hiring off-duty peace officers or private contract security officers to fill the gap, but that, too, can be cost prohibitive. Schools may hire a School Marshal, an employee of the school with specific training and some authority. However, the training and the paycheck for a staff member who does not educate or directly facilitate classes is a financial deal breaker for smaller school systems, charter schools, and private schools. 

This School Safety Certification Course is designed by the Texas Department of Public Safety to train teachers and other staff members who have earned their Texas License to Carry (LTC) to be protectors for their students. This functions as a stopgap for those school systems who cannot afford the other options and who file a Good Cause Exception with the state. 

The training is not cost prohibitive ($150 plus ammunition) and the only additional requirement of the school or school system is providing these trained individuals with written authorization to act as protectors (the UNOFFICIAL term used is “Guardians”). 

PREREQUISITES:

All course attendees MUST have a CURRENT, ACTIVE LTC (it will be checked upon course sign-in). Furthermore, all students will take a written examination based on knowledge given during their LTC training, on which a score of 90% must be attained to continue in the class. All students will also shoot the LTC course of fire and must also achieve a 90% score before continuing the curriculum. These pretests are state mandated, so please study your LTC notes* and go to the range before attending!
